The History of the Claiborne County Historical &
Genealogical Society
The first organizational meeting of the Claiborne County Historical &
Genealogical Society took place in Apr 1982. The Charter & By-Laws were
established, and sent to the State of Tennessee & registered in July
1982.
It has now been over 20 years since the founding of the CCHGS. We, the
members, officers & directors, are proud to announce that we now have a
new library, which opened to the public in mid-April 2002.
Our Society has accomplished many tasks. We have aided in the
registering of many historical sites to the Tennessee Historical
Register. This Society has published "The People's History of
Claiborne County, Tennessee", and more recently,
"The Claiborne County, Tennessee Pictorial History". Many of our
members have produced books to preserve
our history of Claiborne County, Tennessee.
We have placed several historical markers around Claiborne County. Our
current goals are to work with our Claiborne County Commissioners, the
City Alderman, the Claiborne County Library & the Claiborne County
Planning Commission to form a committee to try to build a new library
for our community & for this new library to include the Historical
Society for the preservation of our history & genealogy of Claiborne
Co. Another goal is to obtain the deed to the Old Claiborne Co Jail
House (see picture), and to restore it to a working museum.
The year 2002, was year is our year to celebrate. There were no
elections in May 2002. All the Officers & Directors remained the same
until next election which was held in May 2003. Our annual meeting,
which was held on May 19, 2002, was held to honor those members who
have made conspicuous contributions of time and effort to the field
of history. A Nominating Committee put together a list of those
members that were voted Honorary Members on May 19,2002. We dedicated
that meeting in their honor. We had have a barbeque luncheon &
celebration.

At this time we, the members of the Claiborne Co Historical &
Genealogical Society, wish to thank our Present & Past Mayors &
Aldermen of the City of Tazewell, for their support & for their
providing the Society a place to meet & conduct business. We also
wish to thank our past & present Claiborne Co Commissioners for
their financial support & their interest in preserving the history
of Claiborne Co. We wish to thank the many businesses for their
financial support over the years.
Many of you may not be aware of the fact that Ms. Mary Parkey, past
President, provided her home for the safe keeping of all the society's
records, all of the accumulated books pertaining to the history & the
genealogy records of the people of Claiborne Co. Not only did
Ms. Parkey lose her life in the fire of March 9, 2000, but also all
the records & documents that have been accumulated over the years
were destroyed.
The compilation of the above Charter Members & Officers was taken
from the records of The Claiborne County Historical & Genealogical
Society's publications, "Reflections." If there are any corrections
or additions needed, please contact the Webmaster,
Darrell G. Waddell.
